Direct perception and Experience
We can see things in two ways, directly and indirectly.
Direct : Just looking at a scene, without name and descriptions. Direct seeing is the actual seeing or pure seeing.
Indirect : Viewing a scene with its name and description.
Names and other information are previously stored information in memory of the brain and they appear in between when we are viewing. The seer who sees information in memory is our me thought, is also part of memory. He also distracts our actual seeing.
Me and its observations are only prior information stored in memory. They are not actual. Hence Indirect seeing is not true, it is impure and can be illusory.
Other direct and indirect experiences of touch, smell, sound, taste are similar to vision.
Direct perception is a zero state of mind because past memories are not used and no new images are stored in memory.
In indirect viewing, past memory is used and new images are stored in memory.
Just seeing directly each moment is true meditation, Krishnamurti used to call this as Attention.
Seeing, hearing, touching, smelling etc. can be done without memory. If there is a person in front of us, we should look at him without considering his name, relationship, nature etc. This is the state of nothingness.
If there are other thoughts in the mind while seeing or hearing, it is indirect seeing and seeing or hearing in the void state of mind is direct seeing.
Attention means direct perception and inattention means indirect experience.
We all live in a state of inattention, which creates problems.
JK used to say that there is a space with Center ( Me) and space without center. Space with Center is always limited by past memories and space without center is unlimited.
